Punctuation is placed after closing quotation marks. For example, note the placement of the period in the following statement:
To end the session without saving updates, enter "end nosave".
In standard English the period appears inside the quotation mark as follows:
To end the session without saving updates, enter "end nosave."
Since standard English might cause some confusion as to whether the punctuation (a period in this case) is part of the data to be entered, the convention of placing punctuation after closing quotation marks was adopted.
