A Workstation file is a file stored in a workstation directory at the local workstation or file server.

The format of a Workstation file name depends upon the file system active for the device where the file resides.  When the file system is HPFS (High Performance File System), NTFS (New Technology File System), or VFAT (Virtual File Allocation Table), the name can be up to 256 characters in length, composed of the letters A-Z, the numerals 0-9, and the special characters dash (-), dollar sign ($), at sign (@), pound sign (#), period (.), and the underscore (_).

When the file system is FAT (File Allocation Table), the name can be up to 12 characters in length of the form nnnnnnnn.eee where nnnnnnnn is a maximum of 8 characters in length and the eee is a maximum of 3 characters in length.  The .eee portion is optional.  nnnnnnnnn and eee can be composed of the letters A-Z, the numerals 0-9, and the special characters dash (-), dollar sign ($), at sign (@), pound sign (#), and the underscore (_).  Note that diskettes always use the FAT file system.

When a Workstation file name is required as input, it can usually be preceded by the workstation directory name followed by a backslash (\).  When both the directory name and the file name are entered or displayed together, the entire entry is referred to as the file name.

When just the Workstation file name in entered, in most cases BIM-EDIT/XP assumes the file is held in the currently attached workstation directory (See DirAttach).
