BIM-EDIT/XP can be customized for all users of a specific workstation by creating files in the default user directory.  BIM-EDIT/XP searches the default user directory for control files prior to searching the Site Directory.

If multiple users use BIM-EDIT/XP on a specific workstation, or if a given user wishes to have multiple user IDs available and to customize each separately, user-unique control files should be placed in the Specific User Directory.  Otherwise, user customization should probably take place in the default user directory.  In fact, the "Options" menu provides access only to the default user directory, since that is considered the norm.

The default user directory is usually of the name C:\BIMEDIT\USER\DEFAULT. The C:\BIMEDIT portion can be changed by setting the operating system environment variable BIMPATHU to another value.  Default user directories should probably not be placed on a server, since checkpoint files, the creation of which involve a fair amount of disk activity, are stored in a directory the name of which is formed from the BIMPATHU variable.

Note that the user ID is "DEFAULT" by default.  Unless the operating system environment variable BIMUSER is set to another value, the Specific User Directory and default user directory will be one and the same.

The Specific User Directory should be used for customization that applies to a specific user.  The default user directory should be used for customization that applies to all users of a specific workstation.  Customization that applies to all users on all workstations should be made in the Site Directory.
